Health Department J&K starts special drive against sub-standard drugs

JAMMU, Aug 04:Under instructions from the Health and Medical Education Department following detailed review of this sector, with a view to checking complaints concerning substandard drugs being sold in the market, a special drive has been launched by the Drug & Food Control Organization J&K in the entire state. During the last three days, the Organization inspected one hundred & seventy nine (179) Medical Shops in different districts of Kashmir Division & twenty five (25) Drug Stores in Jammu Division. During the drive Licences of fourteen (14) Medical Shops have been suspended for violation of various provisions of Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940 & rules thereunder for varying periods of time. In addition, two (02) Medical Shops were put on the show cause notices.

Moreover the organization during this period has also lifted 37 samples of various categories of drugs from these Establishments  for test/analysis in order to ascertain their quality. Also sale of certain drugs worth Rs 22,894 /= were put on hold on form 15 in Leh.

This all is being done in the interest of public health care so that quality drugs from right source at right time & at right prices are available to the public.

The Department is giving wide publicity to the need of informing lodging complaint with regard to drugs/medical Shops selling poor quality medicines etc. on the helpline of the Drug & Food Control Organization viz 0194-2495191 for Kashmir Division & 0191-2597445 for Jammu Division.

The Chemist  fraternity during the special drive was strictly directed to maintain sale/purchase records of drugs, to store drugs as per their requirement and to supply drugs only on prescription and against cash Memos, and to adhere to the provisions of the Act in letter and spirit.
