Guwahati, Oct 10: The BJP has managed to increase its tally in the Lok Sabha from 240 to 241 by winning Nagaon Lok Sabha seat where Devashish Sharma (Retd IAS: 2011: AM), who resigned as Deputy Commissioner of Nagaon district of Assam, has defeated his nearest rival and former Dhubri MP Mohammad Badruddin Ajmal of All India United Democratic Front by 142224 votes.
The Congress candidate managed to get around 1.30 lakh votes.
On September 3, 2026 Sharma took voluntary retirement from the service, and just a few days later, on September 8, joined the BJP.
The seat fell vacant after the then-Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined BJP and won Dispur assembly constituency this year.
