SDM issues public advisory cautioning residents against venturing near open water bodies over drowning incidents

Srinagar, May 08: The Office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kangan issued a public advisory cautioning residents against venturing near open water bodies amid rising water levels and concerns over drowning incidents in the region.

The advisory warned people, particularly children and youth, against visiting hazardous locations including Nallah Sindh River, Wangath Nallah, PDC Canal and Barwalla Waterfall, citing the absence of safety infrastructure and rescue facilities in these areas.

It said several vulnerable spots in the Kangan subdivision witness heavy public movement during the summer months despite posing serious risks due to strong currents and slippery terrain.

The administration has directed residents not to enter, bathe, play or approach rivers, canals, waterfalls or other open water bodies under any circumstances.

Parents and guardians have been urged to closely supervise children and prevent them from accessing unsafe locations.

The advisory comes amid a rise in drowning incidents and water-related accidents across parts of Kashmir, prompting authorities to strengthen preventive measures.

It said departments including flood control, police and local administration have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance at vulnerable sites in the Kangan subdivision to prevent any untoward incident.

The advisory appeal to the public to cooperate fully and adhere to safety guidelines in view of rising water levels and associated risks.
