JAMMU, May 8: District Magistrate Jammu, Dr Rakesh Minhas, has issued a detention warrant under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act (PSA) against a notorious offender from the Janipur area for his alleged involvement in multiple criminal activities posing a threat to public peace and order.
The accused has been identified as Veer Vikrant Singh alias Sahil alias Shooter, a resident of Paloura, Janipur.
It said that acting on a dossier submitted by Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu, the District Magistrate invoked powers under Section 8(1)(a) of the J&K Public Safety Act, 1978, and ordered Singh’s preventive detention. He has been lodged in District Jail Udhampur.
The police official said the accused, despite being only 20 years old, had developed a significant criminal record and was involved in several FIRs registered at Police Stations Bakshi Nagar, Janipur and Nagrota.
He was allegedly involved in unlawful possession and use of weapons, armed assaults using swords and hockey sticks, firing outside residential houses, robbery and criminal intimidation.
It added that the accused repeatedly secured bail in different cases but resumed criminal activities soon after his release, creating fear among local residents and disturbing public order.
It said the preventive detention was necessary to stop him from engaging in activities prejudicial to the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.
