SRINAGAR, JUNE 09: Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Mr Abdul Haq today interacted with the experts of IIT Kanpur to workout modalities for adopting an environment-friendly waste management system for J&K.

The meeting was attended by Secretary to Government Rural Development Department, Khursheed Ahmad Shah, Chief Executive Officer IWMP, R K Bhat, Director Rural Sanitation and Additional Secretary RDD, KK Sidha,

The expert team lead by Dr Vinod Taree of IIT Kanpur considered to be an authority in waste management briefed the Minister about latest environment-friendly technology in waste management.

They said the environmental engineering department of IIT Kanpur has developed a toilet that will re-use the water that goes into flushing, rather than discharging it along with the excreta. “It will be possible by not allowing water and solid waste to mix hence recycling of water will be easy,” they said adding that such toilets are not only environment-friendly but also economical while keeping provisions for defecation with privacy, safety and dignity.

The experts also apprised the Minister about the latest technology used for disposal of bio-degradable waste and converting it into energy. They said such plants can be installed in rural areas so that the waste is disposed and energy is also generated from it which can be used for cooking, heating or lighting purposes.

Abdul Haq gave patient hearing to the experts and expressed the desire to introduce the technology in the state for environment friendly disposal of waste besides setting up a sustainable sanitation system. He said the disposal of waste has become a challenge for the government in various districts and government will take help of experts across the country to overcome this problem.
