JAMMU, Nov 30: In India, Alcohol prohibition  is in force in the states of Bihar, Gujarat, Mizoram and Nagaland as well as in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

Legal Experts told Cross Town News that the directive principles of state policy in the constitution of India uner Article 47 state that "the State shall endeavor to bring about prohibition of the consumption except for medicinal purposes of intoxicating drinks and of drugs which are injurious to health".

Advocate Sankalp Gupta told Cross Town News that "The Directive Principles are not justiciable rights of the people but fundamental in the governance of the country. It shall be the duty of the State to apply these principles in making policy laws per Article 47. Per Article 38, state and union governments as duty shall make further detailed policies and laws for implementation considering DPSPs as fundamental policy."

One Retired Administrator told Cross Town News that "In contrary to Article 37, many policies have been implemented bwhich go against the DPSPs such as using intoxicating drinks as source of major tax revenue instead of implementing prohibition for better health of people."

Many states imposed prohibition of alcohol and later prohibition lifted to collect more revenue/taxes by the states, but States like Gujarat and now Bihar have gone on with Ban on Alcohol for longer periods and successful ones.

In last few years , chorus for complete ban on Liquor in J&K , has got intensity, whereas Jammu and Kashmir Government last year  considered  private member bills seeking ban on alcohol in the state.

It will interesting to see how Gujarat Model comes in J&K, if along with Development , Liquor Ban comes into the state, it will help in taking Youth away from addiction and also will help to keep Drugs at bay and People will shower praise on Administration.
