JAMMU, Aug 16: Former Member of Parliament (MP) and veteran Congress leader, Dharam Pal Sharma passed away after brief illness at his Gandhinagar residence here late this evening.
Sharma, a four- time MLA, minister and two- time MP, was not keeping well for the last some time after his leg surgery.
The Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has expressed profound grief and sorrow over the sad demise of veteran Congress leader Sh. Dharmapal Sharma, who passed away this afternoon at a local hospital. Sh. Dharmapal Sharma was a towering figure of the Congress party and made significant contributions to public life in Jammu & Kashmir.
He was four-time MLA from Akhnoor, served as a Minister, and represented the region as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha as well as in the Lok Sabha from the Udhampur-Doda Parliamentary Constituency. Congress leaders recalled that politics and public service were deeply rooted in his family.
His father was also a Congress MLA from Akhnoor. Sh. Dharmapal Sharma worked closely under the leadership of former Prime Ministers Smt. Indira Gandhi and Shri Rajiv Gandhi and remained a committed Congressman throughout his long public life.
Sh. Dharmapal Sharma had been undergoing treatment at a local hospital after he suffered a bone fracture and underwent an operation a few days ago. His demise has left the Congress fraternity and his admirers deeply saddened.
The JKPCC prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and for strength and courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
