Srinagar, August 2: The Jammu & Kashmir Electrical Engineering Graduates Association (JKEEGA) has strongly urged the Government of Jammu & Kashmir to immediately appoint Technical Managing Directors in all Power Sector Corporations, stating that the continued absence of technical leadership at the highest executive level is adversely impacting the efficiency, decision-making, and overall performance of the power sector.
JKEEGA emphasized that the recommendation for appointing Technical Managing Directors is not merely a long-standing demand of engineers but a key recommendation of the Unbundling Committee constituted during the restructuring of the erstwhile Power Development Department into corporate entities.
The committee had categorically envisaged professionally managed utilities headed by technically competent leadership to ensure operational excellence, accountability, and efficient management of the power sector. The Association observed that the power sector is highly specialized, involving complex engineering, grid operations, planning, system protection, project execution, and regulatory compliance.
Such critical functions require leadership possessing deep technical understanding and extensive field experience. Deviating from this principle undermines the very objectives of power sector reforms and compromises institutional efficiency.
JKEEGA reiterated that Many successful power utilities across the country are headed by experienced technical professionals, enabling informed decision-making, improved system reliability, better project execution, and enhanced consumer service. Jammu & Kashmir should be no exception. General Secretary, JKEEGA, Er. Pirzada Hidayatullah, stated: “The appointment of Technical Managing Directors is not a matter of individual aspiration but an institutional necessity.
The Unbundling Committee had clearly recommended professionally managed corporations led by technically qualified officers. Power utilities cannot achieve their intended objectives unless they are headed by professionals who possess the technical competence, operational experience, and institutional understanding required to steer these organizations. JKEEGA urges the Government to implement the committee’s recommendations in letter and spirit and ensure that all Power Corporations are headed by Technical Managing Directors without any further delay.”
JKEEGA expressed confidence that the Government would take an objective view of the issue and implement the recommendations of the Unbundling Committee, thereby strengthening the governance framework of the power sector and restoring confidence among engineering professionals.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all reforms aimed at creating professionally managed, technically robust, and consumer-centric power utilities in Jammu & Kashmir.
