Oct 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation conducted extensive searches at various locations in Punjab and Chandigarh in connection with an ongoing investigation into a bribery case involving a Deputy Inspector General of Punjab Police.
The said officer was earlier caught while allegedly demanding and accepting illegal gratification from a businessman through his associate for “settling” an FIR registered against the complainant and for ensuring that no further coercive or adverse police action was taken against his business.
In a Press Statement said that during the course of searches, the following recoveries were made:-
From the Chandigarh residence of the public servant:- •Cash amounting to approximately ₹7.5 crore; •Gold jewellery weighing around 2.5 kg; •26 luxury watches, including brands such as Rolex and Rado; •Documents pertaining to more than 50 immovable properties held in the names of family members and suspected benami entities; •Locker keys and details of multiple bank accounts; •Four firearms along with 100 live cartridges. From the farmhouse at Samrala:- •108 bottles of liquor; •Cash amounting to ₹5.7 lakh; •17 live cartridges.
From the residence of the alleged middleman:- •Cash amounting to ₹21 lakh; •Various documents suspected to be of incriminating nature.
The searches are part of the continuing investigation aimed at uncovering the full extent of the alleged corruption and misconduct.
Both the accused i.e. DIG, Ropar Range and his middleman were produced in the CBI Court, Chandigarh and the Hon’ble Court has remanded them to 14 days judicial custody.
