Dublin, Ireland , Sep 08: IAS Officer hailing from Jammu and Kashmir Raghav Langer represented India at World’s Medical Regulators Conference in Ireland.
The International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) held the 16th Annual Conference on Medical Regulation at Dublin from 3-6 September.
The theme for this biennial event was ‘People-focused Regulation for a Safer Global Community’; and saw participation by the Medical Regulators of more than 65 countries, in the high profile event hosted by the Medical Council of Ireland.
IAMRA’s purpose is to promote effective medical regulation by supporting best practice, innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing to ensure public safety and enable the global medicalworkforce to deliver quality health care.
The event saw deliberations by member nations on vast topics covering health professions regulation; medical education across the continuum, including primary medical education,
post graduate medical training, and continuing professional development; assessment and remediation; health care policy and medical workforce planning.
India is a key player in the arena of medical education in the world with more than 780 MBBS Colleges and 522 Post Graduate Institutes, with an annual intake of approximately 2 lac students at both UG & PG level.
Dr Raghav Langer, IAS in his keynote address as Secretary of the National Medical Commission, apprised the forum on behalf of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, regarding key initiatives being taken by the country and how the Commission has rapidly moved towards tech-driven, digitally audited, merit-based medical education ecosystem with increasing reliance on continuous annual monitoring, self-assessments & virtual inspections.
The IAMRA chair Ms. Joan Simeon appreciated the pro active steps taken by India for bringing in transparency in accreditation procedures and enhancing mobility of health professionals through recent WFME accreditation and corresponding updation of the World Directory of Medical Schools.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Indian delegation also held hectic parleys on issues of common interest with officials of World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) U.K. & FSMB (Federation of State Medical Boards), NBME (National Board of Medical Examinations) and ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) of the USA. The Saudi Commission for Health Specialists, Data Flow, Intealth, ACGME International, USMLE & FAIMER were the principal & exhibiting partners of the Conference.
Later the Chairman NMC & Secretary NMC also met the Ambassador of India to Ireland, Sh. Akhilesh Mishra to discuss various issues esp the long pending demand of reciprocal recognition of Medical degrees given by the Royal College of Surgeons & Physicians of Ireland.
It is noteworthy that since the taking over by Dr Raghav Langer, an alumnus of Government Medical College Jammu, as JS in MoHFW & Secretary of NMC, the UT of J&K has benefitted with an increase of approx 450 seats in UG & PG courses expected for this academic year and designation of GMC Jammu as the NMC recognised Regional Centre for faculty development programs for the entire UT of J&K and Ladakh; obviating the requirement to go to Ludhiana for undergoing training.
