
SRINAGAR, June 21: A day after Jammu and Kashmir government made Kashmiri, Dogri and Bodhi languages compulsory in 9th and 10th standard in the area where these languages are spoken as mother tongue, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and MLC Charanjeet Singh Khalsa demanded government to introduce Punjabi language as a subject in the schools.
Khalsa while addressing a press conference at party’s Jawahar Nagar Office, here said apart from Sikh Community many other communities speak Punjabi in the state. “We have a good number of people speaking Punjabi in the state, government should consider them too,” Khalsa said, adding, this is a long pending genuine issue of Sikh community in the state. Khalsa said he met Education Minister, Syed Altaf Bukhari and expressed his displeasure for not considering Punjabi language speaking people.
However, Bukhari assured that he would peruse the demand to include Punjabi also as a subject. “Bukhari sahib asked me to forward the case, we are here to pursue it,” Khalsa said.
Earlier, as per government order no 333 EDU OF 2017 issued on 19-06-17, the three regional languages will be treated as compulsory sixth subject for class 9 from academic session 2018-19 and for class 10 from 2019-20 in all government-run and recognized private schools of the state.
