Distillery penalized Rs 2.72 Lakh in J&K

Samba, July 15: Under the supervision of Controller, Legal Metrology J&K, the Legal Metrology Department, Samba imposed a penalty of ₹2.72 lakh on a prominent distillery for serious violations of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

Acting swiftly, the enforcement team headed by the Assistant Controller, Samba, conducted a detailed inspection of the distillery unit and unearthed multiple violations.

These included the use of unverified weighing and measuring instruments during production and packaging, along with non-compliance regarding mandatory declarations on packaged products.

Following the inspection, a formal case was registered, which was booked by the Inspector, LMD Samba, under the applicable legal provisions. Compounding proceedings were initiated, and a penalty of ₹2.72 lakh was imposed on the unit.

The distillery has been directed to immediately verify all instruments and ensure strict adherence to Legal Metrology norms moving forward. Commenting on the enforcement action,

Controller Rajinder Singh Tara (JKAS) stated:” The department remains fully committed to protecting consumer rights and ensuring fairness in trade practices across Jammu & Kashmir. Enforcement drives will continue with full vigour, and violations will be dealt with as per law. All manufacturers and traders are advised to strictly comply with Legal Metrology standards.”

The department reiterates its mission to promote transparency and accountability in commercial transactions across the Union Territory. Consumers are encouraged to stay alert while purchasing packaged commodities and report any irregularities or malpractices to their nearest Legal Metrology office.
