Shillong, May 15: Matrilineal Meghalaya is all set to get its first woman Director General Police with Idashisha Nongrang (IPS: 1992: AM) being appointed its next police chief of the state.

Outgoing DGP L R Bishnoi (IPS: 1991: AM) is retiring on May 19, following which Nongrang will take charge on May 20. Nongrang, who is currently Meghalaya Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guard, has been appointed to the top post for a period of two years.

She had been one of three officers in the running for the top position and several political parties in the state had voiced their support for her being appointed to the position.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote in a social media post, “Breaking barriers and making history, Smti Nongrang becomes the first tribal lady from our state to hold this position, a moment of immense pride for all of us. Wishing her all the best in her new role!”
