Kohli launches state-wide free vaccination drive for cattle

JAMMU, FRIDAY 03:  In a major initiative to boost mutton and milk production in the state, Minister for Animal, Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries, Abdul Gani Kohli today said for the first time vaccination against contagious diseases like Foot and Mouth disease would be provided free of cost.

Mr Kohli said this while kick-starting state-wide free Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination campaign at Ghoushalla, Ambphalla here.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the initiative has been taken to maintain quality of domestic animals. He said earlier the farmers had to pay 50% of the cost of different vaccines meant to safeguard the cattle from various contagious diseases. “Now the farmers can get these vaccinations free of cost from their nearest veterinary centers,” he said.

Mr. Kohli said several innovative initiatives have been taken to revamp the overall functioning of the department with the aim to provide succor to the cattle rearers. He said number of welfare schemes under state and centre plans have been started to explore the potential of animal and sheep husbandry sector in a better way.

MLA Jammu West Sat Paul Sharma, Directors of Animal Husbandry Department Kashmir and Jammu, Office bearers of the Ghoushalla including President Dr Surinder Kumar Sharma were also present on the occasion.

The event was also attended by a large gathering of animal lovers, farmers and officers of the Animal Husbandry Department.

The Director Animal Husbandry gave a very brief update about the scheme and its benefits for the animal rearers.

The Office bearers of the Ghoushalla briefed the Minister about the activities of the Samiti on the occasion. They also presented a charter of demands and the Minister gave them patient hearing and assured them redressal of their genuine demands.
