Massive protests in Kathua over beheaded cow head; Situation under control

         JAMMU, JANUARY 09: Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Public Works Abdul Rehman Veeri today said that situation is under control in Kathua and is being closely monitored by the civil and police administration.  

          The Minister was replying to a point raised by MLA Kangan Mian Altaf in the lower house.

Giving details of the incident, the Minister said that today at around 7.30 am some locals of village Harya Chak, district Kathua found a beheaded head, allegedly of a cow, near the house of Maskeen Gujjar resident of Chak Dhari Harya, Chak Rajbagh. 

“As the news spread, around 200/300 members of Hindu Community assembled there and held protest demonstration and also blocked the road.  Soon after this one person took the cow head in possession.  Thereafter the gathering swelled upto 500/600 and they moved to Harya Chak Chowk in the shape of a procession,” he said.

          Mr Veeri further said that local police headed by SDPO Border and SHO reached the spot and tried to pacify the protestors.  “However, the protestors continued their march and on reaching Harya Chowk the gathering swelled to 700/800.  Police made many attempts to stop the protesters but the protesters managed to reach Harya Chowk where around 300/400 members of Gujjar community had assembled. Stone pelting was resorted to by both the sides,” he said.

          The Minister also said that sensing the situation, the police lobbed some teargas shells and thereafter fired few rounds in air to disperse the mob and to control the situation.  "The protesters dispersed but regrouped immediately," he said.

          Mr Veeri said that DIG Jammu- Kathua Range, DC Kathua and SSP Kathua are on the spot making efforts to pacify the protesting people.

          "During the clashes between two groups, the locals damaged the house of someone belonging to the Gujjar community.  Due to the stone pelting, around 9/10 persons have sustained injuries.  One police constable also sustained injuries during the scuffle," he said.
