Steps afoot to uplift socio-economic condition of farmers: Sham Choudhary

JAMMU, DECEMBER 05 - Department of Agriculture in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra of SKUAST-Jammu today celebrated World Soil Health Day with the theme of Sustainable Agriculture. The function was organized at SKUAST campus in R S Pura. 

Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Sham Lal Choudhary was the chief guest on the occasion whereas Vice Chairman J&K State advisory board for the development of Kissans Daljit Singh Chib was the Guest of Honour. 

Addressing the farmers, Sham Choudhary assured them of redress of their genuine grievances especially disbursement of SDRF and losses suffered due to recent border disturbances for which on spot instructions were issued to the concerned departments. He said the coalition government in the State is committed to uplift the socio-economic condition of the farmers and various steps have already been taken in this regard.

Speaking on the occasion, Daljit Singh Chib also highlighted the policies of state as well as central government being implemented for the overall welfare and benefit of the farming community. He said that farmer is the practical scientist and continuously strives to maximize the production. 

Director Agriculture Production Department Jammu, A K Malhotra, briefed the gathering and highlighted the importance of celebrating world soil day and focused that production and productivity should be commensurate with the recommended dose of fertilizer based on the soil test reports. Emphasis was laid to induce competitive spirit to the farming community as it is essential to undertake the agriculture pursuit to make the agriculture sector glamorous so that young youth of rural areas may involve themselves at their respective fields.  

Associate Director Extension (KVK’s) SKUAST-J, Dr R K Arora, stressed upon the adoption of Agriculture University recommended fertilizer doses and technological interventions. He further informed that soil fertility maps of Jammu region have been prepared at SKUAST-J and shall be highly beneficial for the farming community.                 

A Pamphlet “Swasth Dhara- Khet Hara” was also released on the occasion. The house was informed that 10443 soil samples stands entered on the national portal covering highest number of farmers (58206) in Jammu district whereas 6911 soil samples have been analyzed so far for all the essential twelve nutrients and 40667 soil health cards have also been printed and distributed in the district. Soil Health cards have also been distributed among the participating farmers. 

Kissan Ghosthi and scientific interactions were also conducted jointly by the scientist of KVK and Officers of Agriculture production department during the programme in which more than 200 farmers participated.

Among others, Chief Agriculture Officer Jammu R L Bhagat,  Sr Scientist and Head, KVK Jammu Dr Vikas Tandon, concerned senior officers and farmers were present on the occasion.
