Nirmal Singh pays tribute to1st Param Vir Chakra recipient Maj Somnath Sharma


JAMMU, NOVEMBER 02 – Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh today paid rich tributes to Major Somnath Sharma the first recipient of Param Vir Chakra (PVC)  on his 69th death anniversary .

 Remembering the supreme sacrifice of Major Somnath Sharma, Dr Singh said that he along with his men fought with exemplary courage and has  set an example of courage and qualities seldom equaled in the history of the Indian Army

Saluting  the determination, perseverance & spirit of Major Somnath Sharma Dr Singh said that he upheld the highest traditions of valour and courage of Indian Army.

Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military honour. He was awarded the medal posthumously for his bravery in the Kashmir operations in November 1947.

He laid down his life while evicting Pakistani raiders from Srinagar Airport during the war with Pakistan in 1947-48 in Kashmir. He belonged to the 4th Kumaon Regiment of Indian army.
