Jugal Kishore Sharma inaugurates week long School Olympics in Jammu

JAMMU, OCTOBER 13 - Member of Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma while inaugurating week long sports festival under the banner “School Olympics” today said that the School Olympics is a great step towards inculcating the spirit of competition and sportsmanship in our youth and to prepare them for greater arenas of sports at national and international levels ultimately peaking to Olympics.

MP further congratulated the district administration for organizing the first of its kind tournament and associating the same with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which will mould the youth in the discipline of both sports and cleanliness.

Deputy Commissioner Simrandeep Singh, SSP, Sunil Gupta, ADDC Anuradha Gupta, SDM North Avni Lavassa, SP City North, Vinod Kumar, Commandant CRPF, DSW, Vipan Bhagat among others were present on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner said that the event is being held with the objectives of promoting a culture of sports amongst the students and giving them an opportunity to compete and showcase their sporting prowess and talent. “The event aims at encouraging sportsmanship, teamwork and is an attempt to bring schools  government as well as private, affiliated to Central as well as State Board- to compete on a common platform”, he added.

DC also acknowledged the support and coordination extended by the Sports Council J&K, 160 Bn of CRPF, BSF Jammu Frontier, NHAI, JMC, ICICI Bank, PNB, HDFC, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanathan, Rashtriya Madhyammik Shiksha Abhiyan along with other sponsors towards organizing the event on such a large scale.

The district level inter school sports meet is being organized from October 13 to October 21 by the district administration and the Department Of Youth Services & Sports. The event will see participation from 1500 girls and 2500 boys from 90 schools across the district in 10 sporting events including football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, kabaddi, athletics among others.

Jugal Kishore Sharma later unveiled the trophies and declared the Olympic meet open. In addition to the medals in individual sport category the schools will also be competing for three overall performance trophies – one overall performance trophy for boys and girls each and a special ‘Silver Swachh Bharat Trophy’ to be given to the school which maintains highest standards of cleanliness, punctuality and discipline.

Later, the participants took oath for participating in the tournament with fair play, dedication and discipline in the spirit of sportsmanship. School Olympics commenced with the inaugural volleyball matches between GHSS, Channi Himmat and Army School, Nagrota alongside Army School, Domana and JK Public School, Jammu being played in the presence of the Member of Parliament and the district administration.
