Apex body of Leh sets up 17-member Committee for talks with MHA for granting 6th schedule


Leh, Jan 14: The apex body of Leh today set up 17-member Committee for talks with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on the issue of granting Sixth Schedule or similar status to the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The committee was announced by Chering Dorjay Lakrook, former Minister and a member of the apex body at a press conference here this afternoon.

The Committee comprised Thiksay Khanpo Rinpoche, C Phuntsog, former Chief Secretary of J&K, Sonam Wangchuk, Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Lok Sabha member from Ladakh, Tashi Gyaltson, Chairman-cum-CEC LAHDC Leh, Thupstan Chewang, former MP Ladakh, Chering Dorjay and Nawang Rigzin Jora, former Ministers, former Chief Justice Vinod Gupta, Shetup Chamba, president, All Ladakh Gonpa Association, Konchok Ishay, interim president, Ladakh Buddhist Association, Dr Abdul Kayum, president Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam, Ashraf Ali, president, Anjuman Imamia Leh, Dechen Chamga, president Christian Community Leh, Tsewang Norboo, District Panchayat Coordination Committee Leh, Deskit Angmo and representative from Students’ Union of Ladakh.

Chering Dorjay gave details of the meeting between apex body members and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on January 6. The apex body had demanded Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.

Dorjey added that the Government, however, gave its view point that it was ready to give provisions under Sixth Schedule to Ladakh with safeguards & further added that the newly constituted committee will meet shortly.
