World Red Cross Day celebrated in Jammu


JAMMU, MAY 08 - Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Jammu today organized a function to mark the birth anniversary of Sir Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of Red Cross Movement and recipient of first Nobel Peace Prize. The Day is celebrated as World Red Cross Day to honour the volunteers who render their services for providing first aid to victims of natural disasters and accidents. The theme of this year World Red Cross Day is ‘Everywhere for Everyone’.

Divisional Commissioner Dr. Pawan Kotwal was the chief guest on the occasion, who spoke about the need for providing first aid training to staff of various government departments including Health, Social Welfare and Transport departments so that they can have first-hand experience at the time of emergency.

He appreciated the efforts of IRCS, Jammu for providing first aid to victims of accidents (which occur frequently in J&K due to hilly terrain) and border areas at the time of ceasefire violations.

Later, Dr. Pawan Kotwal felicitated Director Rural Development Department ML Raina, Regional Transport Officer, Jammu Ashwani Khajuria, Colonel 162 Inf. Brigade Romesh Daber, Honorary Secretary IRCS Jammu RC Puri, Executive Committee members, life members, social activists, journalists, volunteers of IRCS and students of Lawrence Public School for their services rendered to IRCS.

Meanwhile, Additional District Development Commissioner Jammu Anuradha Gupta was the chief guest at World Red Cross Day celebrations at Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar. The event witnessed participation of students hailing from various schools of Jammu region who presented a variety of cultural items including dance, songs and plays highlighting social issues prevailing in the society.
