Power situation in Chenab Valley grim: Saroori

JAMMU, Jan 18:Expressing concern over the "grim" power situation in the Chenab Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee Vice President Ghulam Mohammad Saroori-(MLA Inderwal) today asked the J&K Governor N. N Vohra to arrange alternate sources of energy to provide regular electricity to people across the Chenab Valley which comprises of three districts Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban.

"The power position in the Chenab Valley continues to be grim and far from satisfactory. The people living in rural and far flung areas are without electricity and no power schedule is being followed and even metered areas are facing long and unscheduled power cuts much to the chagrin of public," Congress state vice president G M Saroori said in a statement here.

The same situation is being repeated during every winter in Chenab Valley and the people of three districts are left helpless being devoid of basic amenities, especially the power and essential commodities, he said.

"And the people of the Chenab Valley are left helpless being devoid of basic amenities, especially power and essential commodities," Saroori said.

"It seems the administration is hell-bent to keep people into sustained darkness," Saroori said and suggested a policy to overcome the crisis.

"The only solution to overcome the power crisis is a sustainable and well-conceived energy policy and start of work on hydel projects under the state sector and public-private partnership," the MLA Inderwal G. M Saroori said.

In order to meet the challenges of winter vagaries, Saroori said higher-ups in the administration need to ensure a better coordination among different departments especially those providing essential services.

"Though an early weather warning system is in place, in the absence of the required resource mobilization weather alerts do not serve any purpose," Saroori said.
