New Delhi, Oct 8: National Conference (NC) Members of Parliament Shammi Oberoi and Mian Altaf on Thursday joined Opposition MPs in Delhi to protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) voter-list revision exercise.
The Opposition leaders, who had gathered at Moets in central Delhi for a lunch meeting hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, subsequently headed towards Raj Ghat after being denied permission to continue their protest at Jantar Mantar.
The protest, involving MPs and workers from the Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other Opposition parties, entered its third day amid heightened security and a heavy deployment of police personnel in central Delhi.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi alleged that the authorities were preventing Opposition MPs from exercising their democratic right to protest. He also claimed that party members had been assaulted during the course of the agitation.
