Grant ownership rights to displaced persons during Indo-Pak war in 1965 &1971: Sukhnandan to Govt

Jammu, May 2: A deputation of residents from Makwal camp, led by former minister Sukhnandan Choudhary, called on the Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar to raise pressing concerns regarding the long-pending issue of ownership rights for refugees of the Chamb sector who were displaced during the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971.

During the meeting, the deputation submitted a detailed memorandum highlighting the hardships faced by these refugee families for decades.

They emphasized that despite the Central Government having already sanctioned the provision of ownership rights to these displaced persons, the orders have not yet been implemented at the ground level by the concerned Revenue Department.

This delay has continued to keep thousands of affected families in a state of uncertainty and deprivation.

Sukhnandan Choudhary, while addressing the issue, expressed serious concern over the administrative inaction and urged the Divisional Commissioner to intervene and ensure that the necessary directions are implemented without further delay.

He stressed that granting ownership rights is not only a matter of justice but also essential for securing the livelihood and dignity of these families who have sacrificed and suffered due to circumstances beyond their control.

Choudhary further pointed out that due to the absence of land ownership documents, these refugee families are being excluded from the benefits of various government welfare schemes.

They are unable to access financial assistance and institutional credit facilities, including agricultural loans such as tractor loans, which are crucial for improving their economic condition.

Additionally, it was highlighted that many eligible beneficiaries are not receiving support under key schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Nidhi Yojana(PMKNY), as ownership of land remains a primary eligibility criterion.

This has further deepened their socio-economic challenges and limited their opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency.

The deputation urged the administration to take immediate and concrete steps to resolve the issue, implement the sanctioned provisions, and ensure that the affected families are integrated into the mainstream of development by enabling their access to government schemes and financial support systems.

The Divisional Commissioner assured the deputation that the matter would be examined thoroughly and appropriate action would be taken to address their concerns at the earliest.
