Jammu, Jan 04: Dr. Ashutosh Gupta , Principal, GMC Jammu, with temperatures dipping sharply across Jammu & Kashmir, has issued a public interest advisory urging citizens to take precautions against extreme cold.
The advisory highlights that: 50% of cold-related injuries affect people over 60, while 75% occur in males, and 20% happen at home. Hypothermia and Frostbite are the most common dangers, with hypothermia occurring when body temperature falls below 95°F and frostbite damaging tissues in as little as 30 minutes of exposure to -20°F wind chill.
Other risks include carbon monoxide poisoning from improper heating, power failures, frozen pipes, and vehicle breakdowns. *Safety Measures Recommended:* Stay indoors during peak cold hours and check on elderly and vulnerable individuals.
Insulate household pipes, keep emergency heating sources ready, and avoid candles to reduce fire hazards. Carry a winter survival kit in vehicles, including blankets, flashlights, snacks, water, and a charged mobile phone.
Dress in layers of warm clothing, cover the head and mouth, and use mittens instead of gloves. Ensure vehicles are winterized with antifreeze, proper tire pressure, and functional wipers.
The Medical College emphasizes that preventing hypothermia and frostbite is easier than treating them.
Dr Ashutosh advised citizens to remain vigilant and follow these guidelines to safeguard themselves and their families during the ongoing cold wave.
