Srinagar, Oct 29: The Jammu and Kashmir government has stepped up efforts to develop and promote tourist destinations across the Union Territory, with a focus on boosting eco-tourism and pilgrimage tourism.
Several locations have been earmarked for infrastructure development and beautification to attract more visitors.
The announcement was made in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday in response to a question by MLA Sunil Kumar about plans to improve trekking routes and pilgrim facilities at Machail Shrine and surrounding areas.
Officials informed the house that multiple trekking and hiking routes in Kishtwar district are being promoted, including the General Zorawar Singh Victory Trek, Bimalnag–Nagni–Devhadh–Kidhru–Kishtwar route, and several others connecting Gulabgarh, Machail, and Kishtwar. Development works are also underway at Machail Shrine and nearby areas in Padder to enhance pilgrim facilities.
New tourism destinations have been identified for future development, including Jai Guldanda and Padri Top in Bhaderwah, Bhimgarh Fort and Dhanwa in the Pir Panjal region, and Lolab–Bungus Valley, Gurez, and Wular Lake in North Kashmir.
The government said that the eco-tourism potential of Lolab-Bungus Valley, Gurez, and Wular Lake will be harnessed, subject to fund availability and project feasibility.
For Kishtwar district, ₹571.42 lakh has been allocated under the UT Capex Budget 2025-26 for tourism infrastructure, with an additional ₹274.76 lakh released under the Tourism Plan 2025-26 for priority works such as trekking trails, shelter sheds, public conveniences, and beautification.
Other measures include the development of camping sites, tent cities at Gulabgarh and Machail Padder, and basic infrastructure along trekking routes, including signages, kiosks, solar lights, parks, and toilet blocks.
