GONDA, Aug 3: Eleven people, including nine members of the same family, died when an SUV plunged into the overflowing Saryu canal in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh today.
he vehicle carrying 16 people lost control and slipped off the road and fell into the canal.
Local villagers jumped into the canal in an attempt to rescue those trapped, but could not open the vehicle but they managed to pull the vehicle near the edge using ropes and break the window to rescue four passengers.
Among the deceased are six women, two men and three children.
One 10-year-old girl, Rachna, is still missing.
An SDRF team is continuing the search operation for her. The survivors include a girl, who recounted the horrifying moments, saying, we were singing devotional songs when the vehicle suddenly slipped and fell into the canal.
