Supreme Court in-house panel indicts Justice Yashwant Varma in Cash recovery issue

Supreme Court in-house panel indicts Justice Yashwant Varma in Cash recovery issue

New Delhi, May 07: After 40 days of the panel being set up by the top court, the committee submitted its report after conducting due diligence on the probe into the cash recovery issue.

The in-house committee constituted on 22 March to probe the allegations of alleged huge recovery of cash at Justice Yashwant Varma's residence has indicted him in its report submitted to the CJI.

Justice Varma has been given time until Friday, 9 May, to file or submit his defense to the CJI on the in-house enquiry committee report in the case.

The inquiry panel zeroed in on many questions to ensure a thorough investigation before coming to a conclusion.

The in-house committee which probed the case consisted of Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice G. S. Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice Anu Sivaraman.

Earlier, in his defense, Justice Varma vehemently denied all the allegations levelled against him. He claimed that the room which caught fire and where cash was allegedly found was an outhouse, and not the main building where the judge and his family reside.

Earlier, the Supreme Court Collegium, in its meetings held on 20 and 24 March, had recommended the repatriation of Justice Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, his parent High Court. He was directed since then not to conduct any judicial work there.
