Congress deeply condoles demise of Janak Raj Gupta in Jammu

Jammu, Sep 14: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee has deeply condoled the sad demise of former Member Parliament and veteran Congress leader Shri Janak Raj Gupta.

 A condolence meeting was held here today at PCC HQ. Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu to condole the sad demise of Shri Janak Raj Gupta. Leader of Opposition in Rajaya Sabha Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, President JKPCC Mr. Ghulam Ahmed Mir and other senior leaders of the party attended the meeting.

Janak Raj Gupta expired yesterday morning, after he suffered a massive heart attack on Saturday in late evening and was shifted to the Super Specialty Hospital  Jammu. Mr. Gupta had a long inning in politics and served the state and the party in different capacities during his career.

He was became member of the Upper House in 1969 and  thereafter elected twice to the legislative assembly from R.S.Pura in 1977 and 1983. He became deputy speaker 1977. He was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Jammu Parliamentary Constituency 1984 and 1989. He also served as Political Advisor to the then Chief Minister Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad. He held various senior positions in the party from time to time and was also member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Floral tributes were paid to the veteran leader in the meeting and the senior leaders remembered his contributions  in different capacities to the party and the people during his public life spread over to around five decades. He was a humble personality and always remain associated with the people at the grass root levels especially poor and the downtrodden.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajaya Sabha Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, while paying rich tributes referred to his long association with Shri Janak Raj Gupta  and admired his extra ordinary leadership qualities. He admired the personality of Shri Gupta as a human being  having great concern for the poor and downtrodden people irrespective of caste, creed , colour, religion or region and for the ordinary workers of the party. He said that party has lost a strong pillar and he has lost a dear friend and a close colleague in the death of Shri Janak Raj Gupta. Shri Azad appreciated  the d decision of the  PCC leadership to  announce the induction of his son Mr. Harinder Mahajan into the  party who will be  representing the  third generation of the family in the Congress.

Paying rich tributes President JKPCC Mr. Ghulam Ahmed Mir expressed deep shock over the sudden demise of Shri Gupta and described him as a great leader of the party who was liked by one and all because of his humbleness and qualities of  leadership. He said that his death has created a void in the party which is difficult to be filled. Referring to his long career in public life, Mir said that he saw many ups and downs in his public   life but remained a determined soldier of the people and the party.

JKPCC Chief also announced the induction of Mr. Harinder Mahajan Son of Shri Janak Raj Gupta in to the  Executive of the PCC in view of the long and remarkable services of  Late Shri Gupta and his family in the  Congress party.  He expressed deep sympathies with the bereaved family members from entire rank and file of the party.A condolence resolution was also  adopted in the meeting  remembering the  remarkable contribution  of  Shri Janak Raj Gupta in the party and in the service of people and praying  for peace to  the soul and  to give  strength to the family to bear the great loss.

 A number of senior leaders were present on the occasion and  shared their sorrow and grief over the sad demise of Shri Gupta and remembered his services to the people and the party. Prominent amongst them   included Shri Sham Lal Sharma; Shri Madan Lal Sharma; Shri Raman Bhalla, Shri Mula Ram, Shri G.M. Saroori, Smt. Kanta Bhan;  Sdr. Gurmukh Singh; Shri Ravinder Sharma, Shri Rajnish Sharma, Shri Yogesh Sawhney, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma, Shri Shabir Ahmed Khan, Shri Vkram Malhotra, Th. Manmohan Singh, Smt. Namrata Sharma, Sdr. Surinder Singh Channi, Shri Hilal Ahmed Shah, Shri Faqir Nath, Shri Babu Singh, Smt. Indu Pawar, Shri Anil Chopra, Shri Shiv Dev Singh, S. Arvinder Singh Micky, Th. Balbir Singh, Shri Jagdish Raj Spolia, Shri Krishan Bhagat, Shri Darshan Raina, Shri Maheshwar Singh, Sain Abdul Rashid, Shri Ashok Gupta, Shiv Kumar Sharma, Sdr. S.S. Shingari,  Shri Shashi Sharma, Shri Neeraj Gupta, Shri Thomas Khokhar, Pawan Raina, Sanjeev Sharma, Shamsher Singh, S. Manjeet Singh Jatt, Surinder Gupta,  Smt. Lalita Sharma, Shri Krishan Lal Gupta, Hira Lal Pandita, Khushal Bali, Vijay Manhas, Ch. Sukhdev Singh, Madan Lal Malagar, Dr. R.K. Khajuria,  Smt. Padamni Langeh, Masood Choudhary, Lalit Mahajan.

Later large number of Senior Congress leaders attended the cremation at Jogi Gate Jammu which was attended by large number of people from different shades of political and social spectrum of the society.
