CJI questions Govt on cases against IPS officers after change of govt: quotes, "Sorry state of affairs'

New Delhi ,August 29: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana during hearing on a petition filed by suspended IPS officer Gurjinder Pal Singh, who challenged an FIR lodged against him on sedition charges said that booking police officers under various charges after power changes from one party to another party was a "recent trend" but it reflected a "sorry state of affairs" in the country.

CJI Ramana said, "This is a very sorry state of affairs in the country.........When police officers are working and take the side of the particular party in power, then nothing happens. But when another party comes into power and the government changes, the police officer faces such charges".

After the hearing of the case, a bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana directed the Chhattisgarh Police not to arrest its own suspended senior IPS officer Gurjinder Pal Singh in the cases.

The Supreme Court, however, directed Singh to cooperate with the agencies in the ongoing investigation.

The bench, also comprising Justice Surya Kant, directed the Chhattisgarh government to file its responses to the two separate petitions within four weeks during which the police officer will not be arrested.
