JAMMU: Ace Chess player from J&K, Meenal Gupta brought laurels to the State by winning gold medal in the Commonwealth Chess Championship held at Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka.
Meenal, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Sunjuwan and trainee of Ace Chess Academy, won the gold medal in Under-14 category.
More than 500 players and officials from 11 commonwealth countries took part the championship, said Atul Kumar Gupta, President All J and K Chess Association, in a handout issued on today. In a tough competition, Meenal Gupta remained undefeated in the nine-round event and won the gold.
Secretary J and K State Sports Council and other members of sports council congratulated Meenal for her historic achievement.
Meenal Gupta said that it was due to very high-tech training by her coach and hard work for last four years she could win this medal.
