CM Mehbooba Mufti files nomination from Anantnag assembly


 

Anantnag, June 1: Chief Minister, Ms Mehbooba Mufti today filed her nomination papers for by-poll to Anantnag assembly segment.

Ms Mehbooba, who is seeking election from the Anantnag assembly segment for the first time in her political career, filed her nomination papers before the Returning Officer here.

She was accompanied by senior PDP leader and Member Parliament, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, PDP General Secretary, Mohammad Sartaj Madni, PDP Chief Spokesperson, Dr Mehboob Beigh, and legislators, Aijaz Ahmad Mir and Firdous Ahmad Tak at the time of filing her nominations.

As Ms Mehbooba Mufti arrived at the District Election Office here, thousands of people thronged the venue to welcome her. 

Talking to the media persons after filing her nomination papers, Ms Mehbooba said the people of the Anantnag will once again repose faith in her father and elect her as their representative so that Late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed’s dream of bringing peace and development to Jammu and Kashmir is realized.

"Mufti Sahab started his political career from Anantnag and people of the area showed their trust in him during difficult times. I am hopeful that people will again repose their faith on PDP and give me an opportunity to serve them and fulfill the dream of Late Mufti Sahab,” she said.

Pertinently, Ms Mehbooba, who is also the President of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been elected to the state assembly three times in the past 20 years with her first victory coming in 1996 elections from Bijbehara segment as a Congress candidate. She has never lost an Assembly election in her political career.

She resigned from the Assembly in 1999 to float regional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with her father, late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and other colleagues.

She won the 2002 Assembly polls from Pahalgam segment in Anantnag district but resigned two years later after she was elected to the Lok Sabha from Anantnag.

She won the 2008 assembly elections from Wachi assembly segment in south Kashmir's Shopian district and completed first full six-year term in the House till 2014.

She was elected to the Lok Sabha from south Kashmir in 2014 general elections and did not contest the Assembly elections held later that year.

Member Parliament, Nazir Ahmad Laway and PDP leaders, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Abdul Rehman Veeri, Javaid Mustafa Mir, Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Syed Farooq Ahmad Indrabi, Muhammad Ashraf Mir, Abdul Rahim Rather, MohammadKhursheed Alam,  Rafi Ahmad Mir, Mufti Sajjad Hussain, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain, Abdul Gaffar Sofi, Nizamud Din Khatana, Ch Zaffar Hussain,  Advocate Javed Ah Sheikh , Showkat Gayoor and PDP Youth President, Waheed Ur Rahman Para besides others were also present on the occasion
