Chairman/Chief Executive Councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh/Kargil is the most important post of the autonomous body of the thirty councilors group that leads the entire District of Leh/Kargil. It is this body of councilors that decides the fate of Ladakh. LAHDC in Leh was formed after the great struggle by the humble Ladakhis in 1995, since inception it has been serving the people of Ladakh. In 2015, elections to 5th LAHDC Leh was held and for the first time BJP came to power with majority of seats in their berth. Consequently, late Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo took the charge of leading the LAHDC Leh in his hands and provided his mentorship to his new team of LAHDC Leh, that not only had seasoned leaders but majority of which was young and energetic new leaders. Unfortunately, without completing his full term he died of a cardiac arrest and whole of Leh-Ladakh as well as J&K has been grief stricken. With his demise BJP also lost a leader whose place cannot be filled by anyone else.
Although no one can fill the position of late Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo, but as the famous quotation goes “Birth is not the beginning, death is not the end” LAHDC Leh has to complete its term and expectations of the people as well as the vision of Late Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo. With this in mind BJP has to choose a new Chairman/CEC at the first place, which is not an easy task as it seems.

The new Chairman/CEC must be very dynamic and energetic so as to fulfill the expectations of the people and party also. He should also be future oriented who will not merely work for the infrastructural development of Leh but will work for the overall upliftment of society be it social, economic, political, education, gender, nepotism, corruption, justice and so on and so forth to have a better future. Keeping all this in mind and analyzing the recent political scenario of Ladakh as well as popular sentiments on social media, one can only discern that the councilor of Martselang constituency Jamyang Tsering Namgyal (age 33) will be the only leader who will be viable for the position of next CEC. Jamyang Tsering Namgyal is not only an able leader but he has proven himself time and again, even when he was the President of All Ladakh Student Association Jammu, he has contributed his capacity for the betterment of whole student community outside Ladakh especially with the issues of Subsidise LPG for Ladakhi Students studying in Jammu, Scholarships Issues, against Injustices with Ladakhi Students etc. After getting elected as a councilor since 2015 with highest margin of votes among the thirty members, he not only contributed towards his own constituency but for the betterment of all Ladakhi society as a whole. Infact he was the key leader for the opening of the JK-PSC examination centre in Leh besides various examination centre like JKSSB, SSC and Banking Exams etc. Moreover he fought for the various molestation and harassment cases faced by students in Jammu as well as Ladakh, one of the recent of which is GMC molestation case. Politically too, Mr Jamyang Tsering Namgyal has proven himself by winning the LAHDC Leh election with the biggest margin, despite breaking the stereotype of not belonging to any elite, rich or influential family of the region, which in itself is a breakthrough achievement as well as a ray of hope for a pluralistic democracy. Not only this, keeping the accountable nature of true democracy he has always published his constituency progress report in the digital media, to prove his accountibility as well as transparency with his voters which also prove his capabilities to serve as well as to bring political awareness among masses. Furthermore one of the basic quality of an able leader is not only to lead but take all of its folk together and become a bridge between the Union, State Government and Ladakh. To serve this purpose he remained Private Secretary to Member of Parliament Thupstan Chhewang and is presently also serving as State Media Secretary for J&K BJP.

Jamyang Tsering Namgyal is one of the elected Councillors of a single Constituency comprising of six or seven villages but his works and public relations reached to the people living in extremely backward villages of far flung areas. In his last 7 years political career he keeps himself often touring all villages of Changthang, Nubra, Sham of Leh District and also the villages of Kargil and Zanskar. He knows each and every single villages of Ladakh and its conditions so it can be wrong to judge him by age as compare to others. If Avny Lavasa can be the District Magistrate of Leh at the age of 32 then how can some one undermine Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of being younger?

To keep the spirit of democracy alive, that will not only serve the Ladakhi society but whole of the world one must be pragmatic and not follow the stereotypes. One should understand the nature of important role played by the leader of the society and should always be ready to reap its repercussions. What we choose today will be reflected in the coming years thus it is advisable to be more prudent this time than ever. At the same time it is upto the will of every single citizen of India (Ladakh) to express its opinion which is the essence of democracy.
