 Govt confiscates 7,665 kg of adulterated cheese across JKUT in 2025



Jammu, Feb 15: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir confiscated 7,665 kg of adulterated cheese across the Union Territory in 2025, with an estimated worth of Rs 16.32 lakh, Health Minister Sakeena Itoo said.

Laboratory tests found 47 cheese samples to be substandard and one sample unsafe.J

The Food Safety Department has initiated action against 18 food-business operators involved, with most cases under process.

Govt needed to strengthen the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to empower officers and protect public health, while lawmakers highlighted staff shortages, weak infrastructure, and procedural delays & for stricter punitive measures including sealing of offending establishments.
