Bhubaneshwar, July 2: NHRC issues notice to Odisha Chief Secretary, DGP in atrocity against Dalit men in Ganjam after taking suo motu cognizance of a disturbing incident involving the alleged abuse of two Dalit men in Ganjam district of Odisha.
The panel has issued notices to the Odisha Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC has also asked to mention the actions taken against those responsible for the assault, as well as any compensation provided to the victims in the report.
The incident, which took place on June 22 at Kharigumma village under Dharakote police limits, involved two Dalit residents, Bulu Nayak and Babula Nayak of Singipur village. The duo was returning home after purchasing three cows, reportedly to gift them for a wedding in their family.
On their way back, a group of men allegedly intercepted them, accused them of cattle smuggling, and demanded money. When the victims refused, they were reportedly subjected to severe physical and mental abuse.
Their heads were partially shaved, they were forced to crawl on their knees for nearly two kilometers, and were also compelled to eat grass and drink dirty water. Following public outrage and a viral video, the local police initiated action.
As of now, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigation is underway.
