Under Anuradha, LMD challans 107 traders with a penalty of Rs 3.59 Lakhs

Srinagar, June 06;  On the directions of Anuradha Gupta, Controller Legal Metrology Department, Jammu & Kashmir, a special inspection drive was conducted across the Union Territory in view of the upcoming festival of Eid-ul-Adha to ensure consumer rights are protected and market practices remain transparent.

During the drive, 1778 inspections were carried out at various business establishments including meat sellers, grocery stores, bakeries, and retail outlets. The focus was on checking short weighment, overcharging, use of non-standard weights and measures, and violations related to packaged commodities.

The inspections led to the booking of 107 challans, with a penalty amounting to ₹3,58,900 realized from erring traders.

These drives were conducted both independently by Legal Metrology officers and in coordination with other departments, as special squads were constituted by the district administrations to monitor markets and prevent consumer exploitation during the festive period.

“Such enforcement drives are carried out regularly by the department to promote fair trade and protect consumer interests, especially during festive seasons,” said Anuradha Gupta, Controller Legal Metrology J&K.

She also extended warm greetings of Eid to the people on behalf of the department and urged consumers to remain cautious while making purchases, ensuring they receive accurate quantity and pay fair prices.

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant. Any violation observed especially short weighment or overpricing should be immediately reported to the nearest Legal Metrology Office.

Citizens may also reach out through the department’s actively managed social media handles for quick redressal or to lodge complaints.
