GMC Jammu unveils Cancer Policy for J&K

Jammu, 4 Feb.: GMC Jammu on world cancer day  took a giant step in management of cancer by unveiling the Cancer policy for JKUT.

The cancer policy was stated in the gracious presence of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Ms. Sakina Massod Itoo, Honourable Minister HME, Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah Secretary HME, Dr. Sameer Kaul an imminent cancer specialist of India, Dr. Ashraf Ganie, Director SKIMS, Dr. Pavan Malhotra Director principal ASCOMS. Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal GMC Jammu and also a renowned Oncologist prepared the cancer policy and carried out the proceedings.

This was followed by one day national CME conducted by the Govt Medical College, Jammu where in top most Oncologists from across the country participated.

Prominent among them included Dr. Rakesh Jalali from Appollo hospital Chenni, Dr. Dipenjan Panda from Apollo Hospital Delhi, Dr. Anusheel Munshi from Delhi, Dr. Vijay Patil from Mumbai, Dr. Vimal Pandita from Dehradun.

More than 500 delegates within the State and outside the State attended the said National CME.

Dr Farooq Abdullah former Chief Minister of J&K was the Chief Guest of the said function. He is in his address said that the disease demand not only medical surgical and radiation therapy but also demand social psychological and economical of the aspects associated within it.

He said such patients need to be treated with empathy and sympathy and further he said to make communications with patients and address of their every minor enquiry which is very important and can established a trust amongst the doctors and the patients as well as their attendants.

Further, Honourable Minister for Health and Medical Education Dept. Ms. Sakeena Ittoo in her address said that Late Dr. Sheikh Abdullah had led down the foundation stone of this institution in the year 1982 and the family has immense contributor not only in the shape for the upliftment of the state but also for the medical field and the fraternity.

She said the Government is committed to achieve the medical excellence at par with the Premier Institution of the country. She praised the efforts of the current administration of the GMC Jammu for various efforts done in the interest of patient care.

She 
advised the Administrative Secretary H&ME Dr. Sayed Abid Rashee Shah that there is need to create awareness of the disease at the very beginning and added that attempt should be made to create awareness of cancer at the Schools and Colleges levels so that it go a long way to prevent this deadly disease at the very beginning.

The ocean of faculty, resident postgraduate MBBS students and paramedical staff and allied staff member and teams of of administration are witnesses the proceedings of the said inaugural function.

Principal Dr. Ashutosh Gupta in his inaugural address welcomes all the dignitaries on the dies and off the dice and presented the road map and future vision of GMC, Jammu.

Dr. Ashutosh Gupta laid down the pertinent points of the cancer Policy of Jammu and Kashmir. These include: 1. Make effective cancer screening policy for preventable cancers:  Head and Neck cancers.  Breast cancer.  Lung cancer  Cervical Cancers.  Prostate cancer.  Colon Cancers. 2. Introduce Cervical cancer vaccine in Universal Immunization Program.

3. Introduce Oncology facilities in all new Medical Colleges as per NMC guidelines. These include Chemotherapy services, Surgical Oncology.

4. Major Tertiary care institutes like SKIMS, GMC Jammu, GMC Srinagar must have all high- end oncology facilities like Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Diagnostic facilities like PET Scan, High end Molecular Oncology labs. etc.

5. Introduce Palliative care services up to all district hospitals. 6. Consider banning/restricting all Tobacco products.
