Under Dr Ashutosh, GMC Jammu achieves milestone with 63rd, 64th corneal transplantations

JAMMU, Dec 4: Department of Ophthalmology at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu successfully completed its 63rd and 64th corneal transplantations today, marking a major achievement in the field of vision restoration.

These groundbreaking surgeries were carried out under the guidance of Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, and Medical Superintendent Dr Narinder Singh Bhutyal.

The successful transplantations were facilitated by the first-ever hospital corneal retrieval from a deceased donor in Jammu, a feat made possible through the coordinated efforts of transplant coordinator Irfan Ahmad Lone from SOTTO J&K, along with Dr Riya Gupta and Dr Manpreet Kour. Dr Hans Raj Sharma, Professor and Eye Bank Manager, and Dr Vijayta Gupta, Assistant Professor, provided essential supervision throughout the process.

The surgeries were led by Dr Ashok Sharma, Professor and Head of Ophthalmology, and his surgical team.

The recipients, a 55-year-old female suffering from vascularized corneal opacity and an 80-year-old male with pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, are now set to experience a significant improvement in their quality of life thanks to this life-changing procedure.

The successful surgeries were supported by the dedicated efforts of Dr Pragya Arora and Dr Swati Mahajan, both postgraduates in the department.

This achievement highlights the exceptional commitment and expertise of the upgraded Ophthalmology Department at GMC Jammu in advancing eye care and offering renewed hope to those in need of vision restoration.
