17 injured in fresh clashes; Attendance in Secreteriat low; Curfew lifted from most areas

SRINAGAR, Aug 23: Seventeen people were injured in Vihil and Nowgam areas in Shopian district on Tuesda, when Security forces tried  to disperse protestors.

Those with grave injuries have been admitted to Srinagar SKIMS for specialised treatment, while others are being treated at a medical facility in Vahil and Shopian district hospital.

According to reports, the Army personnel and members of J&K police’s counter-insurgency, SOG were removing barricades erected by the locals along the road passing through the twin villages, on this residents rushed out of their homes shouting pro-freedom slogans and pelted stones on the security personnel, who tried to disperse the crowd.

Injured locals alleged that security forces fired teargas canisters and pellet guns resulting to injuries.

However, police officials denied the charge, saying that the security forces were removing the roadblocks when they faced heavy stone-pelting. To disperse the protesters, the security personnel resorted to aerial firing and lobbed tear smoke towards the ‘violent crowd’, but failing to contain situation, pellet guns were also fired.

Authorities continued restrictions in many parts of Kashmir Valley as life remained paralysed for the 46th consecutive day on Tuesday.

Curfew would continue in old Srinagar city and Anantnag town while restrictions will remain in force in all other districts of Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kupwara and Badgam towns, a police official told reporter.

However the attendance in Secretariate is less as can be seen from these photographs.

According to statement issued by Zonal Police Headquarters, following improvement in situation curfew was lifted from the most areas of the Srinagar where situation remained normal. There was increased movement of the people and the vehicular traffic in Srinagar today. Howevercurfew remained in force in Anantnag District and five police station areas of down town city besides, Batamaloo, Maisuma and Kralkhud.

The spokesman said there was greater movement of people in many areas of the valley following the improvement in the situation.

Three incidents of stone pelting were reported from Shopian, Srinagar and Sopore till the filling of this report. These incidents, the spokesman said, were reported from Vehil in Shopian, Nowgam Chowk near Ahmad Hospital in Srinagar and Khushal colony in Sopore. Except for these incidents situation remained under control across the valley till the filing of this report, the spokesman added.
