District level inter-zonal sports tourney concludes in Jammu

 

JAMMU, Aug 27:District Level Inter-Zonal Kabaddi and Volley Ball tournament under-19 category organized by department of Youth Services and Sports concluded at Government Higher Secondary School Domana, here today.Divisional Commissioner Jammu Dr. Pawan Kotwal was the chief guest while Director General Youth Services and Sports, Jahangir Mir, was guest of honour on the occasion.

         

District Sports Officer, Sukhdev Raj, Joint Director YSS Madan Lal besides ZPEOs, panchs/sarpanchs besides prominent citizens, parents and students in large number were present on the occasion.The whole event was held under guidance of District Youth Services & Sports Officer, Jammu. In the tournament fourteen zones of district Jammu participated in the disciplines of Kabaddi and volley ball.

         

Speaking on the occasion, Divisional Commissioner said that sports are essential part of our life and help in maintaining good physical and mental health besides, being a big source of entertainment and enticing the spirit of competence and sportsmanship. He added that sports spirit makes a man more humane, cultured and disciplined which enhances one’s capability to live and let live. He congratulated the members of the organizing committee for the smooth, planned and successful conduct of the tournament. He appealed all the children to participate in sports along with academics for their overall development.

 

Dr. Kotwal also witnessed an exhibition match played between Khour and Akhnoor Zone and appreciated the players for practically displaying the concept of sports. The DG Youth Services and Sports also spoke on the occasion and threw light on the activities of the department. He said that department of Youth Services and Sports is making all out efforts to provide vibrant platform to nurture the talent of budding sports persons in the state. He said that government has accorded priority to sports sector and efforts are being made to promote sports activities especially in rural areas by giving fillip to the rural sports. He said that department of Youth Services and Sports was earlier participating in 20 disciplines and now would participate in 37 disciplines as per the revised calendar. He informed that this year Youth Services and Sports department would host six sports events in Jammu and Kashmir besides it would also organize Women Athletic, Badminton and Table Tennis events.

 

Meanwhile, in Volley Ball discipline Khour and Jourian Zone defeated Akhnoor and Chowki Choura Zone while in Kabadi Marh-Bhalwal zone defeated Jourian-Khour Zone.Divisional Commissioner distributed trophies among the winner and runner up teams. Cultural programmes were also presented by the school children which was highly applauded by the audience.
