Date of filing GST returns extended till 24 March: Advisor Sharma attends meet

NEW DELHI, MARCH 14: The 39th GST Council Meeting was today held at New Delhi under the Chairmanship of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Union Territory of J&K was represented by Advisor to Lt Governor K K Sharma.

The Advisor put forth the views of UT Government on various agenda items discussed during the meeting. Sharma raised the issue of difficulty, faced by the tax-payers post-August 2019 for filing their returns in view of the connectivity issues. The council was apprised that a large number of tax payers could not file their returns even after the connectivity has been restored as the default by non-filing of returns has resulted in the imposition of late fee payment.

The council accordingly decided to extend the date of filing of returns pending from August 2019 to March 24th, 2020.

This measure will give relief to a large number of Tax Payers who could not file their returns post August 2019 and thus will enhance the compliance level for filing returns in the Union Territory of J&K
