Prisons dept launches literacy campaign for inmates

JAMMU, MARCH 24- The Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department has launched a literacy campaign in all the prisons of the state, for which the Department has joined hands with Srinagar group of schools and accredited institution of the National Institute of Open schooling, New Delhi. With this initiative jail inmates can complete secondary and senior secondary education during their imprisonment. The campaign aims to impart education to the inmates in order to re-orient them ideologically and enable their smooth resettlement in the society after their release.

Speaking on the occasion, Director General of Police, Prisons  S P Vaid expressed hoped that this initiative will go a long way in reforming and rehabilitating the inmates. He added that the department is committed towards providing constant and standard correctional services to the inmates.

The Prison Department is presently offering both academic education programmes including IGNOU run courses and vocational trainings to the inmates. A large number of inmates are undergoing these programme across the state.  besides, libraries equipped with books on religion, literature, moral education, and general studies are also available in the prisons.
