Governor's Rule in state blessing in disguise: ANC

JAMMU, March 05: Awami National Conference (ANC) has expressed serious concern over rift between People's Democratic Party and the BJP that has raised questions about the continuation of the alliance and government formation in the state. The 10-month tenure of the PDP-BJP government had often been marred by controversies and governance had taken a back-seat. Treasuries were not clearing bills; teachers went without salaries for months and long power cuts led to street protests. Earlier, the common man would suffer, only influential people got their way. Now everyone can go and get their work done," ANC Provincial President, S. Gian Singh said in Jammu.

In Srinagar too, few seemed to be missing the elected government. The feeling was that the alliance was more concerned about ideological and political standpoints than delivering basic governance. Both PDP and BJP claim they have delivered good governance but democratic set-up is any day better than Governor's Rule. Unlike the elected governments which witness excessive bureaucracy, governance in the State is improving during the Governor’s rule as the Governor has been able to cut the red tape, Singh maintained.

During the past two months, an impression that governance in the State has improved drastically under Governor is gaining ground as during this stint of the Governor’s rule in the State, Governor Vohra has been after them, pushing them to implement decisions meant for the greater good of the public. Governor Vohra has also been gearing up the administration for speeding up the process for conducting Urban Local Bodies polls in the State. “Some administrative decisions like providing relief to the people whose houses were damaged in the September 2014 flood and small traders were taken during the Governor’s rule. “He has been taking some one-man decisions, which we appreciate, ANC Provincial President said.

Governor Vohra has also been proactive in starting dredging of River Jhelum and flood spill channels on a large scale, which had been a non-starter during the People Democratic Party-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government in the State, Singh added. Governor’s rule has also been good news for the retired government employees, who previously had to stand in long queues at the Accountant General’s Office but in the Vohra’s administration, their files are being cleared on priority at the earliest. People are happy with the Governor’s rule due to the bad governance during 10-months of the PDP-led government Singh said.
