6th Transport Advisory Committee meeting held Kohli calls for better enforcement of Traffic regulations, expansion in online transport services

 

JAMMU, Dec 03: Stressing better coordination between various concerned departments, transport associations and stakeholders for effective implementation of Traffic–Transport Management System in the State, Minister for Transport Mr. Abdul Gani Kohli Thursday said that providing safe and affordable transport services to the people is priority of Government.

 

Minister said this while chairing 6th meeting of State Transport Advisory Committee meeting here today.

Former Legislators, Ch. Talib Hussain, T. S Wazir, Ch. Pyara Singh, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Commissioner, Civil Military Liaison Home Department, J. P. Singh, Secretary Transport,  Syed Kifayat Hussain Rizvi, Transport Commissioner Parvaz Iqbal Khateeb, IG Traffic Jammu, Viplav Kumar,Member Trasnport Advisory committe & J&K Sports Council Rahil Gupta, Vice Chairman JDA, Mubarak Singh, MD SRTC, GA Sofi, RTO Jammu Ashwani Kumar Khujaria, RTOs Kathua and  Srinagar, representative of different Transport Associations, senior citizens  and senior officers of Transport, MVD, SRTC, Housing and Planning were present in the meeting.

 

Mr. Kohli said that Government is contemplating to make Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) more stringent calling upon the concerned functionaries to strictly enforce traffic rules on the ground.

 

Mr. Kohli said installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) on vehicles has already been started which has yielded good results. The Minister said that several initiatives aimed at ensuring better transport facilities to passengers have been taken by the government.

The Minister said that government would strengthen the infrastructure and the functioning of transport sector. He said measures are afoot to replace old JKSRTC and private buses from the roads and instead of these modern luxury buses would ply on the roads soon.

 

The Minister said that services under the VAHAN 4.0 programme have already been started in the State and three District Offices of ARTOs have been made online. He said all ARTO offices in the State shall be upgraded and online services shall be provided to the people of the State within 6 months. He said switching over to VAHAN 4.0 online programme in the State will ensure that each and every data of vehicle, its owner and driver shall be available online to one and all.

 

Giving details of Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), Transport Commissioner briefed the meeting that department has generated revenue of Rs. 93.92 Crore till ending October 2015 as against a target of Rs. 183 crore for this fiscal. He said that there are 1315830 commercial and non-commercial vehicles of different kinds registered in the State. Mr. Khateeb said that over 50% of these vehicles numbering 683056 are motorcycles/scooters.

 

Regarding mass awareness among the people regarding traffic rules and regulations, the Transport Commissioner informed the meeting that during last year, 507 general awareness programme and 421 awareness programmes in school/colleges were conducted. He said 26475 drivers were covered in these programmes along with their medical check-up during the year.

 

The meeting was informed that land for establishment of Institute of Drivers Training and Research at Jammu and Srinagar were identified whereas land for ARTO Kulgam and Kargil has been acquired and construction work is in progress.The members of the committee gave their suggestions for streamlining the transport system in the State.
